Funny story about these shoes. I bought them from Piperlime MONTHS ago. Actually, I had meant to return them but they sat in a FedEx box in the trunk of my car for a long time. Once I finally realized that the return period was waaaay over, I took them out of the box. Thank God I decided I liked them again so here they are. They’re perfect any time I have to go to the city for work. I’m not usually a flats girl (hence the return debacle), but these are kind of fancy. Well, fancy enough to be work appropriate.

I work for a fantastic company. Because of some of my day to day struggles, I may forget from time to time, but events like the one I attended yesterday definitely remind me. Yesterday, our company had it’s 2nd annual Women in Technology Forum for employees. It was hosted in San Jose but there were dozens of satellite locations around the world that tuned in via video including NYC (yay technology!) We heard from our leadership, both male and female, received amazing advice on how to keep moving forward in our careers, and had a frank discussion about Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In (which is at the top of my Amazon wish list.) Additionally, it gave us an opportunity to meet and get to know colleagues that we don’t typically interact with. So many amazing action items came from just one day of mind share — it was great!
We also had a very enlightening discussion about executive presence that strengthened our commitment to this blog. According to a study by the Center for Talent Innovation the three aspects of executive presence are appearance, communication, and gravitas. City and Burbs may be a fashion blog on the surface but our intent is to inspire women to dominate the ‘appearance’ aspect. Every day (okay maybe every other day or a couple times a week), we aim to demonstrate a polished and professional look that exudes confidence and executive presence and we hope that’s what you get. It’s why we started the Wear to Work Blog Collective and why despite our very busy lives, Diana and I still find some time for this blog. So, we hope you keep reading and if you have any thoughts to share, please discuss in the comments.

As Di mentioned yesterday, we’re back from our Sandy-induced hiatus. It’s been a difficult time for many in our state so if you can, please help the efforts. See yesterday’s post for more details on how to do just that.
Today, I’m linking up with The Tiny Heart and Penniless Socialite for their “Look What I Got” link-up and featuring a steal I got at Forever 21 last week – this peter pan collar top. I usually have an issue with this type of collar because I’m top heavy. However, this particular neckline was cut low enough for it to actually be flattering — and it was only $22.80! Gotta love forever 21 .
